National Library Service (NLS) is a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page. Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS circulates books and magazines in braille or audio formats, delivered by postage-free mail or instantly downloadable.

If you or your child have a permanent disability you may be entitled to a free, lifetime pass to visit the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands. Qualifying disabilities include physical, mental, or sensory impairments. The pass can be used at over 2,000 Federal recreation sites across the nation. Those include National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Forests, and other federal recreation lands. There is currently a $10 processing fee. Children involved in formal and informal kinship care in most cases are eligible for Head Start services according to the Head Start Act and Head Start Program Performance Standards. If the caregiver receives or is eligible to receive public assistance, a child in their care is eligible for Head Start. If a child living with relatives receives a “child-only” TANF grant, then the child receives public assistance and is eligible for Head Start. Contact your local Head Start program for more details.
Now there’s a free new tool from the FBI that can help. Our Child ID app—the first mobile application created by the FBI—provides a convenient place to electronically store photos and other vital information about your children so that it’s literally right at hand if you need it. You can show the pictures and provide physical identifiers such as height and weight to security or police officers on the spot. Decatur Youth Services has an after school tutoring program open to all students in 1st – 12th grade. The program includes tutoring, mentoring, recreational activities, homework help, snack and meal, and transportation. There is no cost to participate.
